A Home Warming Story - Energy Efficiency & Savings at Kwadacha First Nation
Note: This is an updated version of a video posted in 2016.
Kwadacha First Nation was spending a lot of money on electricity. Elder Janet Donald describes the upgrades that reduced her BC Hydro bill by half. Other examples of BC First Nations communities implementing effective home energy solutions are available here. This beautifully animated video, created by Lantern Films, uses paper art to tell the story of Janet Donald, an elder who lived in Kwadacha First Nation, a northern BC community. Janet speaks about her experience in a 2011 pilot project, which looked at energy costs and identified opportunities for reducing energy consumption in 11 households. The project was collaboratively led by local energy champion, Tracy Charlie, Quality Program Services, Fraser Basin Council and BC Hydro. Upgrades received by homes included upgraded windows, doors, insulation, thermostats as well as air sealing. Janet ended up saving half of her BC Hydro bill, and the average home in the pilot saved $2000 per year. Are you looking for ways to reduce home energy costs in your community?
