(Lheidli T’enneh Territory - Prince George, BC) – The BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) honours First Nations on National Aboriginal Veterans Day. BCAFN recognizes the sacrifices made by those who served, as well as by their families and communities. This year marks a significant yet sobering moment in time as we recently witnessed the apology by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) leadership for the systemic racism, discrimination, and harassment experienced by its members, including Indigenous veterans and service members.

“For First Nations, this apology brings painful awareness of the long-standing barriers, erasure, and exclusion faced within the military. It also marks a step toward reconciliation as it begins to address the broader systemic injustices endured by First Nations,” stated Regional Chief Terry Teegee. “We have a proud and enduring history of military service, from fighting alongside Canadian forces in both World Wars and Korea to playing vital roles in peacekeeping missions. Yet many First Nations veterans faced rejection and invisibility within the ranks, with their identities questioned or silenced.”

BCAFN recognizes the significance of this day as Canada continues to engage in meaningful dialogue and action toward reconciliation with First Nations, including addressing systemic issues within the military and broader society. First Nations veterans are actively involved in this process, advocating for their rights, recognition, and reconciliation. Their ongoing involvement reflects a commitment to both protecting the country and honouring their communities’ traditions of service and guardianship.

While thousands of Indigenous peoples have served in Canada’s military in past campaigns, many First Nations continue to enlist and actively serve the nation today in various roles and capacities, bringing unique skills, perspectives and leadership shaped by their cultural heritage and values. National Aboriginal Veterans Day serves as a poignant reminder of the need to recognize, celebrate, and support First Nations veterans while also working towards healing, understanding, and unity as a nation.
