BC First Nations Climate Leadership Agenda

Series of In-person Engagements

BCAFN is seeking feedback from First Nations title and rights holders in co-developing the First Nations Climate Leadership Agenda (FNCL Agenda in BC). From April to July 2024, BCAFN will host a series of regional engagement activities across BC to foster discussions and identify key priority actions and recommendations to the federal government for implementing and advancing the BC FNCL Agenda while ensuring guiding principles are upheld. In BC, the FNCL Agenda will complement the work undertaken by the First Nations Leadership Council (FNLC) to implement the BC First Nations Climate Strategy and Action Plan's pathways and actions. BCAFN is undertaking the First Nations Low-Carbon Transportation Project to improve access to equitable, safe, reliable, and affordable low-carbon transportation for First Nations in BC. Your input will help us understand gaps, issues, and opportunities for transportation, low-carbon transportation, infrastructure, and services to inform recommendations for legislation, policy and program reform.

Please join the Assembly of First Nations at the in-person Water Symposium and Trade Show. The event is focused on addressing important water-related issues that First Nations are facing, such as access to safe, clean water and sanitation. This year's theme is "Bridging the Gap", which aims to bring attention to legislation, sustainable funding, long-term transfer of care and control, and the implications of a new national water agency for First Nations.

Wildfire Resiliency and Training Summit

BC FireSmart is hosting a Wildfire Resiliency and Training Summit. The event includes a few days of professional firefighter training and a three-day conference covering the latest research, technologies, and practices for communities to prepare for the upcoming wildfire season.

Our Collective Advantage: Indigenous Consent

April 22-23, 2024 | Sheraton Centre, Toronto

First Nations Major Projects Coalition is hosting Our Collective Advantage: Indigenous Consent. to see how Indigenous rights, included in UNDRIP-driven Indigenous-industry partnerships, drive commercial success that benefits all.  Several speakers will discuss Indigenous influence on finance, corporate partnerships, UNDRIP, Environmental Indigenous consent, energy, and mining, etc.

The Indigenous Resource Opportunities Conference 2024 promotes successful collaborations among Indigenous communities, governments, resource developers, and business leaders. It highlights the mutual benefits of Indigenous communities and provides a platform to discuss equitable access to jobs and training for resource development projects.

The 2024 Turtle Island Indigenous science conference will unite scholars, knowledge keepers, and other experts across North America (Turtle Island) to share advances and experiences in Indigenous science, research, education, and policy.

Canada's plan for long-term managment of used nuclear fuel is under adaptive phased management. AFN is interested in receiving feed back on nuclear fuel, transportation, and storage in Canada. This dialogue series allows for First Nations to learn new updates and provide feedback for AFN to better advocate for First Nations' involvement in decisions about nuclear fuel activities across Turtle Island.

The FNCEBF aims to promote increased Indigenous community participation in the clean energy sector within their territories and treaty areas, by supporting applicants up to $50,000 to undertake activities such as feasibility studies to engage with proponents of clean energy projects.

The Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty (IFS) Grant provides non-repayable funding to communities and organizations wanting to develop or expand their Indigenous food systems, including innovation for sustainability and growth of Indigenous agriculture and food sovereignty.

Two funding streams are available separately to support the process of activities from planning capped at $150,000 to implementation, capped at $250,000.

The BC Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program offers two grant options to applicants. 

  1. The Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant provides network planning and infrastructure grant cost-sharing opportunities up to $500,000. Funding from these grant programs supports the development of active infrastructure, such as travel lanes, pedestrian/cycling improvements, lighting, and wayfinding.
  2. Active Transportation Planning Grant targets smaller communities that develop active transportation network plans up to $50,000 cost sharing.

The Green Municipal Fund's Community Efficiency Financing $300 million initiative supports Indigenous communities and municipalities to create, launch and expand home energy upgrade financing programs for low-rise energy projects. GMF provides additional support for studies, pilot, retrofit, and new build capital projects.

The "Envisioning the Indigneous-led Conservation Economy" report was created following a RAD gathering in April 2023. The aim is to support Indigenous Nations and communities in restoring relationships and Indigenous knowledge systems and asserting rights and responsibilities. The report provides an overview of the events and outcomes of the gathering.

 

The Connecting BC Report outlines the province's 10-year plan for development, uniting local and regional transit as an integrated whole. The plan aims to connect BC communities through province-wide express bus service, increase bus service, expand HandyDart and transit programs, increase ferry options, and invest in rail connections. 

 

Fire Smart BC Home Partner's Program (HPP) is designed to engage residents in voluntary wildfire mitigation activities by offering a professional home assessment with property-specific recommendations. 

 

Snow and Water bulletins provide essential information for projected conditions for snowpack, which impact the water table of the BC. As well as projected outcomes for future drought conditions.
