(Lheidli T’enneh Territory/Prince George, B.C.) – On this important day, the British Columbia Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) stands firm in our commitment to uphold the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which is now recognized as law in Canada. First Nations leaders, Elders, youth and community members have fought tirelessly for our rights and for a seat at the table in the governance of our traditional territories. Our struggles have guided us toward creating economic certainty, ending costly legal conflicts and contributing to the shaping of Canadian society.
“The bluster and threats directed at Canada have generated anxiety and fear in all Canadians, but we must stand firm in our resolve to uphold the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples,” stated Regional Chief Terry Teegee. “While we build, we protect; and while we grow, we will preserve for future generations. The prosperity that we all want to share must come with clean and healthy lands, water and air that we will be proud to pass on to our children.”
On National Indigenous Peoples Day, BCAFN calls on all Canadians to recognize the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as the guiding compass. It is a legal and moral framework that not only honours our rights but also fosters a future where all Canadians can thrive together. Canada must follow its own law and align legislation with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. There can be no shortcuts, no rollbacks, and no apathy.
