The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is convening the 42ndAnnual General Assembly (AGA) hosted in Toronto, Ontario and taking place virtually July 6-8, 2021. The election of National Chief will take place during the virtual AGA, with votes cast online or by phone on July 7, 2021. This year’s theme is Building Our Future with a focus on maintaining the momentum of progress and on the action required to rebuild from a pandemic.

Chiefs from across the country generally come together twice a year to set strategic direction based on First Nations needs and priorities. The Chiefs Assemblies provide a venue for First Nations leaders to direct the work of the AFN, the National Chief and Executive Committee through resolutions. It is just one way First Nations leaders bring forward concerns and priorities of First Nations members.

In accordance with the Charter of the Assembly of First Nations and the By-laws of the National Indian Brotherhood, an Annual General Assembly is to be held in June or July of every year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in-person gathering restrictions, the July 2021 Annual General Assembly will be hosted virtually to ensure the safety of First Nations leadership and other attendees.

The AFN AGA and National Chief Election will be held virtually (on-line/telephone). Access to a computer with high-speed internet or telephone/mobile phone will be required.
