Working for Watersheds: First Nation Watershed Sector Dialogue

BCAFN is collaborating with Working for Watersheds to host a virtual First Nations Watershed Sector Dialogue Session to discuss opportunities, barriers, and priorities for sustainable employment and economic growth in our emerging watershed sectors in BC.

This session is part of a broader dialogue series. The watershed sector is an economic driver and reconciliatory opportunity to enhance the rights of Indigenous Peoples by enhancing First Nations employment opportunities in water stewardship, protection, and jurisdiction.

Climate Resilient Housing Webinar Workshop

The First Nations Housing & Infrastructure Council is looking to connect with 3-5 First Nations in rural and remote regions to build climate-resilient community housing systems. This project is part of an initiative to support First Nations climate resiliency strategies.

By empowering communities with knowledge and experience to improve regulations, codes, and standards, infrastructure funding and relevant policies to improve in housing and technical systems needed in communities.

BCAFN and the First Nations Emergency Services of BC (FNESS) have partnered to host a webinar and virtual workshop series intended to support First Nations to learn, discuss and utilize climate projections, data and tools for climate action. 

Part 1 of this Climate Data Workshop is an interactive opportunity to support participants in learning how to search, access, and utilize First Nations Reserve-specific climate data hosted on the FNESS Public Information Sharing Webpage.

Part 2 of this Climate Data Workshop continues the development of participants for in-depth learning on Lightship platform. FNESS will demonstrate the use of climate change templates, including adaptation tools, environmental impact tracking, and reporting tools. 

Attendees will receive a free Lightship account and may use the tools for their community. Relevant links and guides will be shared with participants for interested Nations.

If required, FNESS will provide in-person training for First Nations interested.

Hosted by the Indigenous Centre for Cumulative Effects (ICCE), this national conference is an opportunity to listen to interactive presentations. Panellists will discuss innovative ways to handle the social, cultural, and environmental components of cumulative effects work.

The knowledge shared is intended to empower communities to take action and continue their contribution to Indigenous leadership with cumulative effects.

National Indigenous Clean Energy Forum

Join Indigenous Clean Energy for the 6th annual National Indigenous Clean Energy Forum to hear from Indigenous clean energy leaders of the 20/20 Catalysts Program

The 20/20 Catalysts Program has been successful in building Indigenous clean energy capacity across the country by establishing partnerships between Indigenous communities, utilities, clean energy development firms, Crown governments, and clean energy companies.

Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas Planning Certificate

Deadline: June 23, 2023 | Delivery: Virtual and Cohort

In partnership with the IISAAK OLAM Foundation, Vancouver Island University has led the design of Canada's first post-secondary program specializing in planning for Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs).

This certificate will educate the next generation of planners with the skills, knowledge, and capacity to support the establishment and stewardship of IPCAs in BC. Students will gain a greater understanding of Indigenous approaches to land relationship planning and holistic and integrated approach to stewardship that IPCA represents. 

It includes six distinct and interconnected courses. Course delivery is designed to serve those employed full-time and seeking ways to advance reconciliation, conservation, and planning.

Emergency Management Assistance Program (EMAP) provides funding to First Nations communities so they can build resiliency, prepare for natural hazards and respond to them using 4 pillars of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

Project Accelerator

Deadline: May 19, 2023

The newly launched Project Accelerator from Indigenous Clean Energy supports the start-up and implementation of Indigenous energy-efficiency housing projects. The program is open to all First Nation, Inuit, and Métis communities and housing organizations.

Project Stewards and participating communities will move through capacity-building training, gain access to a national network of experts and mentors, and complete the program with a concrete energy efficiency project underway, including $125,000 in Project Grant support.

Our Community Our Water Grant

No deadline - First Nations may join at any time

The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) Drinking Water Safety Program aims to support awareness and preservation of First Nations' community drinking water sources. The FNHA will provide from $500 to $5,000 for communities to support hosting a Water Awareness Day Event.

The event must include:

  • Information about your community's drinking water sources
  • How the water is treated before it reaches people's homes and facilities
  • Source water protection and conservation

Indigenous Climate Change Adaptation Planning Toolkit

CIER Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources

The objective of the Indigenous Climate Change Adaptation Planning (ICCAP) Toolkit is to provide a suite of user-friendly tools, resources, and key considerations to support Indigenous individuals and communities interested in undertaking climate change adaptation planning.

The intent is for the toolkit to be used by communities at all different stages of the adaptation planning process, including communities with little or no prior experience.
